Building responsibly. Creating lasting value.

Sustainability starts with the decisions made long before construction begins and continues through the life of what we build. We focus on reducing environmental impact, using resources more intelligently and drawing on research and innovation to deliver better-performing places for the future.

SUSTAINABILITY IN PRACTICE

Better outcomes, beyond construction.

As a company, we do more than evolve the built environment. We are also committed to improving the social environment and creating lasting value for the people and communities connected to our work.

Sustainability is not treated as an afterthought. We work with clients, consultants, suppliers and project partners to embed responsible thinking into the way projects are planned, procured and delivered.

Our approach is focused on three outcomes:

  • Economically sustainable development

  • Protection of the environment

  • Social enrichment

Reducing our impact through better decisions.

Icon promotes environmental best practice across our operations and projects.

In Australia, we operate under an accredited AS/NZS ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System, supported by project-specific Environmental Management Plans that identify and manage environmental risks throughout construction.

We continue to develop environmental capability within our teams, including training senior employees as accredited Green Star professionals. Our experience extends across projects delivered to Australian Green Star requirements and international LEED requirements.

Our environmental targets.

Our environmental ambition is focused on reducing carbon, waste and impact across the built environment, with a long-term vision of:

Zero
Carbon

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting lower-carbon approaches to construction and building operation.

Zero
Waste

Reducing construction waste, making better use of sustainable materials and supporting buildings designed for longer life.

Zero
Impact

Minimising harm to natural environments and biodiversity while looking for opportunities to create better environmental outcomes.

Social impact

Creating value beyond construction.

Our construction activities support a broad range of groups and people facing barriers to employment. Through social procurement, employment pathways, volunteering and community partnerships, Icon uses the scale of our projects and our purchasing power to create value that extends beyond the buildings we deliver. Our approach is focused on creating lasting social outcomes for the communities in which we work.

Social procurement

Icon uses its buying power to generate social value, often going well beyond the intrinsic value of the goods, services or construction being acquired.

Our Social Procurement Strategy targets a minimum 1% spend with social benefit suppliers across the 2023–2026 period. Delivered in collaboration with organisations including Kinaway, Social Traders and Supply Nation, the strategy is supported by an extensive social benefit supplier database and procurement processes embedded across the business.
